A number of
Golden Jubilee projects got realised during the past
month.
St. Xavier’s College.
St.
Xavier’s College Burdwan, was inaugurated on 11th
July. The upgradation of St.Xavier’s School Burdwan
in its Golden Jubilee year, also makes it the 50th
Jesuit institute of higher education in India, 4th
Jesuit college in Bengal and 2nd college of Kolkata
Jesuit province.
Inaugurating the College Bishop of Asansol diocese
Rt. Rev. Cyprian Monis expressed happiness that
quality higher education will now be provided to the
youth of the region, who may not be able to go to
St. Xavier’s Kolkata for various reasons.
Newly appointed Principal Fr. Paul Arockinam, who
single handedly worked to realise the dream project
of the province, expressed his gratitude for the
wonderful cooperation he received from the Jesuit
province, local people, district administration,
government and University authorities which made the
upgradation possible within the Jubilee year itself.
University has permitted six Honours courses in
Arts, Science and Commerce streams for the first
batch and allotted 30 seats for each subject.
English and Accountancy honours are the subjects in
demand. The other honours courses are Biotechnology,
Computer Science, Sociology and Geography.
Fr. Provincial announced the appointment of Fr.
Jimmy Keepuram as the new Vice Principal of the
college.
Evening Coaching Centre
On the Feast of St. Ignatius another Golden Jubilee
project, the Evening Coaching Centre was established
for the students from Bengali medium schools in the
neighbourhood. The coaching will be conducted for
Maths and English, four days a week. With the aim of
developing their self confidence, the project has
identified a team of dedicated teachers who will
focus on the use audio visual aids and
conversational skills. Representatives of eight
local clubs met a number of times with two senior
teachers who were interested in the project Dr.
Amitendra Mohan Goswami and Mr.Kaushik Chakraborty
to work out the details of the programme and
facilitate the selection of teachers and students.
Dr. Bibhutosh Mondal, Municipal Councillor of Ward
13, inaugurated the centre.
Golden Jubilee Football Tournament
Golden Jubilee football tournament was held on 2nd
and 3rd August. All the Jesuit Higher Secondary
schools and Claret school Sahanagar participated in
the 9 aside tournament. St. Xavier’s Kolkata emerged
champions, defeating Claret School by one goal.
Hospitality and organization of the tournament won
the hearts of the participating teams besides
enjoying the fellowship of Jesuit schools. Mr. Gauri
Shankar Bhattacharya Municipal Councillor of Ward 14
and next door neighbour and Secretary of Burdwan
Sports was the Chief Guest. St. Xavier’s Durgapur
has accepted to host the tournament next year. Fr.
K.C. Jacob and Fr. Dominic Savio President and Vice
President of the Managing Committee respectively,
Fr. Zenith Williams Principal of St.Xavier’s
Durgapur, Fr. Joseph Kulandai Vice Principal of St.
Xavier’s Collegiate School were present during the
finals.
Burdwan Inter School Talent Fest
At the initiative of the District Magistrate of
Burdwan, a Talent Fest was organised for the
students of major schools in the town for the first
time. Fr. Paul Arockiam, the convenor of the
programme, had a tough task getting the headmasters
and management of various government and private
schools to jointly organise the event. St. Xavier’s
hosted Drama competition the concluding valedictory
function. St. Xavier’s emerged overall champions by
a margin of over 100 points.
Fr. ES Joseph joined the school as the Vice
Principal of ISC section and Director of the Hostel
on 5thJuly.
Sch. Antomy Robert joined as Assistant VP in the
Secondary Section
Edu
Fest 2014
Edu Fest - two days of seminars, presentations,
exhibitions and competitions by the students were
held on 24th and 25th of July. According to Fr.
Paul, Edu Fest is intended to bring out the best in
every student especially those who do not find
themselves in the top ranks academically hesitate to
come up in class. Every student is expected to
participate in some activity in a group. It is
designed to bring the students in the margins to the
centre. Fr. Cyriac Sebastian SJ, who was the Chief
Guest this year, inspired the students to realise
this value with anecdotes from the life of former
President Dr. Abdul Kalam.
